The aim of this lab was to perform utility mapping and network analysis using QGIS, leveraging data stored in Microsoft Access. Utility mapping is crucial for maintaining and managing infrastructure networks, such as electrical utilities. By accurately mapping these networks, utility providers can enhance service reliability, plan for maintenance, and respond more efficiently to outages. This lab specifically focuses on processing point data, assigning section IDs based on specific attributes, and converting points into paths to visualize the utility network.
Objective The primary objectives of this lab were: 1. To import and process utility data from Microsoft Access into QGIS. 2. To display point data on a map and convert these points into a shapefile. 3. To assign section IDs to points using custom Python scripting in QGIS based on the 'S_E' attribute. 4. To create paths from the processed point data to visualize the utility network. Methodology 1. Data Import and User Permissions: • Imported the utility data from Microsoft Access into QGIS. • Set user permissions to ensure data integrity and security. 2. Displaying X and Y Data: • Displayed the imported point data (X, Y coordinates) on the QGIS map interface. 3. Handling Null Section IDs: • Discovered that the 'Section_ID' field was null, necessitating the use of Python scripting to populate this field. 4. Python Scripting to Update Section IDs: • Utilized the following Python script to update the 'Section_ID' field based on the 'S_E' attribute and a starting GPS number. 5. Converting Points to Paths: • Used the 'Points to Path' tool in QGIS to convert the updated point data into path data, effectively visualizing the utility network. 6. Displaying the Data: • Displayed the newly created paths on the map to complete the utility network visualization.
